The master design plan is one of the first to be undertaken in the context of the security issues raised in the aftermath of the events of 9/11/01, and one of the most comprehensive taken since the approval of the National Capital Planning Commission's Urban Design Security Plan. The plan has received unanimous approval from the federal reviewing agencies and high marks from public interest groups focused on protecting the integrity of the National Mall.
