2010 Annual Meeting

Update on Planning for Annual Meeting, February 2010

2010 Planning Committee, Potomac Chapter, ASLA

Thank you all.  Eleven field sessions and eighteen tours were submitted for the Annual Meeting last week, before the January 27th deadline.  This is a terrific level of commitment from everyone and a wonderful range of topics.  National ASLA will let us know sometime in March which submissions they will accept and we will post the results at that time.
A big thank you to everyone who submitted tours and field sessions.  Not every submission was accepted by the 2010 Planning Committee but all efforts were appreciated.  Special thanks to Elisabeth Lardner and Mark Gionet for their long hours reviewing and responding to submissions.

The Potomac Chapter is now poised to host the Annual Meeting next September.  As a result of the 2010 Kick Off Reception hosted on November 5, 2009 by National ASLA, we now have subcommittee chairs for our 7 subcommittees and many members have signed up already to volunteer.  Thank you to those who are serving as subcommittee chairs.

If you haven't yet signed up, check out the subcommittee listed below and contact the chair directly to volunteer.  Many subcommittees are up and running, so please do not delay. If you have signed up but haven't heard from the subcommittee chair, please contact them again.  The tour and field session committees still need volunteers to help with the tours on September 10, 2010.

The subcommittees and chairs are:

Guidelines

General

  • All 2010 tours and field sessions will take place on September 10, a Friday (remember traffic conditions and factor in rush hour travel patterns)
  • Tours and field sessions must start and end at the Convention Center in downtown Washington, DC
  • Logistical support (buses, water, parking fees, etc.) will be provided by National, but your proposal should include how your tour or session would be executed and what support is needed.  Include 2 staff leaders and 2 assistants that you schedule.
  • Be mindful of costs and don’t make financial commitments all contracts are negotiated and signed by National
  • Be fair and consider firm equity the intent is not to be a showcase for a single firm’s work but an example of our region’s work
  • Match the time to the offering generally tours and field sessions run a half day, but if appropriate they may extend to a full day.
  • All tours and sessions should end no later than 5:30 pm
Tours should be enjoyable field experiences that access sites/projects that are not normally open to the general public.  If tour destination is a public site, it must add value to the experience. Provide a tour title, a marketing statement with a compelling description of the tour, identify leaders or speakers, and what a participant might gain from the experience.

Field Sessions should be a documented educational experience beginning with a classroom presentation followed by the field trip. Provide a presentation title and outline,  identify at least 3 educational objectives, speaker's bios, a marketing statement, and a description of the session.
