Millennium Park

Chicago, Illinois

The sketch is a page from my notebook drawn during the recent ASLA convention in Chicago. For me it demonstrates the value of drawing as a way of seeing and documenting observations. Drawing forces me to focus on what I am looking at: its character, components, parts, proportions, dimensions and relationships, things easily overlooked when photographing a place. If you weren’t at the convention, I hope it piques your interest in Millennium Park. It is an extraordinary ensemble of work that creates a powerful sense of place where none previously existed.

Sybil B. Harrington Cactus and Succulent Gallery,

Phoenix Botanic Garden
Phoenix, Arizona

Dale Chihuly's glass sculpture presents a dramatic display of color and texture adjacent to native cactus and desert plants.   Art in the garden can be more subtle but Chihuly's work uses contrast to produce extraordinary results.  The temporary installation was on exhibit last Spring, 2009.  The garden, designed in collaboration with the Oasis Group and  Steve Martino, Cactus City Design received the Potomac and Maryland Chapter's Merit Award, 2008.

Town Point Park,

Norfork, Virginia

Town Point Park is a renovation project that addresses today’s more complex, diverse needs along the waterfront. Built in the mid-1980’s, it needed to be redesigned in order to accommodate a wider range of uses. The 2009 renovation has transformed Town Point into a versatile space where multiple festival events can occur simultaneously as well as a daily downtown destination where citizens can enjoy an interactive fountain, public art, and improved waterfront access.  For more information on the multi-use functions of the waterfront park, contact LSG.

US Capital Grounds, Washington DC

The US Capital Grounds, designed Fredrick Law Olmsted in 1874, are enjoyed by thousands of people visiting the nation's capital.    But few people notice the details like Matthew Evans, Landscape Architect of the Capital.  He intimately knows the US Capital Grounds and all the Olmsted details that delight the viewer.  The cast stone wall near 1st Street shows twigs entwined with vines just under the wall's ornate cap.   The craftsmanship is amazing.  The US Capital Grounds is a well loved Olmsted park worth visiting again and again.
