Fallen Lumber Co in Halethorpe, MD is a distributor of and the home of Carbon Smart Wood’s HQ. This will be a hands-on tour of the facility to understand the ins and outs of salvaged wood and its role in decarbonizing the built environment. During the tour, various team members will discuss where lumber comes from in the US and opportunities to divert waste from the supply chain – including their own project sites. The tour will guide users through the process of turning trees into finished building products.
Participants will see first hand the process of turning logs into lumber; the differences between salvaged and industry material; the challenges with our current lumber grading system. Finally, the Carbon Smart Wood team will discuss innovative uses of salvaged material that are being implemented across the country today. The session will also address the positive benefits of biophilic design and its impact on the health and well being of buildings’ inhabitants.
Learning Objectives:
1. Where does the US lumber supply come from?
a. What lumber supply sources are being underutilized?
b. Potential positive impact of salvaged material
c. The real differences between traditional and salvaged lumber
2. From tree to project – the process to make lumber & wood products
a. Grading lumber – the cost of specifying FAS grade lumber or specific sizes.
b. Drying – process, technology
c. Fabrication – turning lumber into products
3. Innovative uses – Thermo, CLT/Mass Timber
a. Indoor, outdoor, and structural applications
After attending this program, participants will be able to:
1. Compare traditional commodity woods with more sustainable options
2. Explain how the provenance of wood impacts the sustainability and carbon sequestration of project materials – and connects them to the material’s source
3. Summarize the steps involved in turning trees into finished wood products – including trees from the project site
4. Identify opportunities to specify salvaged material into building plans
5. Explain the benefit of biophilia and wood to the mental health and well being of users of buildings
