This position supports the teaching of plant materials and plants and ecosystem related courses required for the Bachelor of Landscape Architecture curriculum. Students in Plant and Soil Sciences and Entomology and Wildlife Ecology also take these courses as a part of their major requirements. A successful candidate will have broad landscape architecture, horticulture and botany backgrounds and ability or proficiency to teach plant materials courses such as Spring and Fall Landscape Plants and Indigenous Woody Plants of the Eastern United States. A successful candidate will also be expected to teach core design studios at multiple Undergraduate levels and employ a range of project scales and complexities. These might include ecological planting design, landscape restoration, or plant or ecosystem-focused capstone projects. A strong background in current sustainability practices and environmental topics such as pollinator decline, invasive plants, sustainable landscape management, or ecosystem service provision in managed landscapes is preferred.

Job Roles: Technology is at the core of landscape architectural work and is used in all phases of the design process. The BLA program seeks a Continuing Track professor to teach digital design. This position requires a candidate who has strong skills in visual communication, digital media workflows, and landscape simulation.

Additional areas of expertise should include foundational design principles, urban or regional design and analytics. This position requires an individual with teaching and scholarly or professional experience in digital landscape modeling, representation, and media in the context of contemporary landscape architecture design process and workflow. A successful candidate is expected to teach core design studios at multiple undergraduate levels that employ a range of project scales and complexities. The successful candidate will also lead refinements to a broad range of digital design and GIS instruction in the BLA Curriculum. Areas of scholarly interest might include novel approaches to representation and the pedagogy of graphic instruction, landscape visualization, and modeling, or visual communication and literacy for increasingly diverse student populations and audience types. Candidates must hold a LAAB accredited professional degree in landscape architecture and a terminal degree in their field of graduate study.

Examples of Important Duties

  • Designs and manages all aspects of projects in a multi-disciplinary team setting including: developing project scopes, preparing in-house concept designs, presentation graphics and construction documents, coordinating work with stakeholders, utility companies and regulatory agencies, and procuring/managing design services performed by outside consultants. 
  • Implements effective project budgeting and cost control, estimates project costs, monitors and reviews contract payments, manages consultant schedules, ensures timely and comprehensive project reviews, and proactively manages projects through construction bidding. 
  • Meets with community groups virtually or in-person to obtain their suggestions and ideas on proposed projects, prepares formal written reports and presents projects to the Montgomery County Planning Board.

  2. Four years of progressively responsible designer and/or construction experience that includes substantive work in the range of duties and responsibilities in this class specification.
  3. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted, which together total 8 years.
  4. Valid driver’s license in accordance with both State and Commission rules and regulations.  Driver’s license must be unencumbered by restrictions, revocations, suspensions, or points that could limit the employee’s ability to drive Commission vehicles or perform driving duties required by the position of assignment.

Preferred qualifications: 

  • Advanced degree
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Adobe Creative Suite, Sketch-up and GIS ESRI software 
  • Knowledge of horticulture/arboriculture and soils
  • Knowledge of local, state, and federal government regulatory permitting associated with site development projects 
  • Experience with construction in environmentally sensitive areas
